Education, training, research and development at the Fritz-Süchting-Institut für Maschinenwesen (IMW) cover the following areas:

Technical equipment

The IMW possesses well equiped laboratries, test stands and the relevant computer the corresponding research areas (optical stress assesment, acoustics, CIM).

Testing of machine parts can be undertaken on two hydraulic distortion test stands, a cyclic torsional tester, a  rotational bendign and  torsion test stand, a  static deformation test stand as well as a separate rotational bending machine. A tensile tester with integrated transversal tester and a winchdrum test stand are available to test conveyor parts. Wireless data transmission is possible via a 64 channel telemetry. A centrifugal  test bed for fast rotating machines such as rotors, a test stand for baffle mills and reaction swing mills complete the IMWs test rigs for process engineering machinery. The laboratory for static photoelasticity can handle parts from microscopic size up to around 1m diameter. The required induces stress free machining of parts and manufacturing of loading aparatus is handled by the experienced workshop. The technical equipment of the laboratory for dynamic photoelasiticity can measure highly dynamically loaded parts. An electromechanical actuator can load parts selectively with frequencies of up to 5 kHz. The use of special optical measurement systems allows the visualisation of load states that are induced by shock loading.

Technical equipment, cooperation offers and research emphasis of the IMW

The acoustic laboratory of the IMW has been equipped with state of the art measurement equipment:

  • Oros signal analysors with 4 and 32 channels with a bandwidth of up to102kHz per channel for real-time measurements

    3 modal shakers (1kN, 200N, 10N)

  • Rotation-Laservibrometer

  • Intensity mearsurement probe

  • acoustical sensors

  • Oros signal analysis software

  • Vibrant Me´Scope modal analysis software

  • Matlab for special functions

The IMW also possesses a quiet room. All current analysis methods used to analyse machine structures are available, such as:

  • FFT

  • Oktave-analysis

  • Synchronous Order Tracking

  • Constant Band Tracking

  • Color waterfall- and color spectorgraphy

The analysator can be used as a stand-alone recorder for mobile use.

The CIM-laboratory consists of two 4-axis milling machines (MAHO MH700S/MH600), one lathe (Monforts MNC 5), a spark erosion machine (CHARMILLER ROBOFORM 505) with 3D-control, and a ZEISS coordinate measuring machine with NC-table. The CAM solution of the company DLoG includes a workshop orientated NC-programming system, facilities to transfer data to the machine controls and applications for logging machine data as well as machine status display. The CAD/CAM-Systems in use are CATIA V5 und Pro/Engineer with Pro/Manufacturing. Machine-specific post processors allow a continuous CAD/NC-process chain. The PDM system we use is axalantÆË from EIGNER running on an ORACLE8i- database.

4-Achsen-Fräsmaschine MAHO MH700S

The computer equipment consists of multiple servers which connect the 130 computers of the IMW. These include different internet servers (WWW, FTP), a windows domain controller, a database server and a SUN Enterprise 450 for the 60 SUN workstations. The available software includes CAD packages like Pro/Engineer Wildfire 2, CATIA V5 as well als the FE programmes MARC/PATRAN, ANSYS 8.1 and Pro/Mechanica.


The IMW possesses a complete Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Tooling process chain to laser sinter metal parts. Part of this is the Rapid Tooling machine EOSINT M 250 made by EOS. It is used to generate prototypes functional pars and tools (moulds and elctrodes). Different design workstations provide CAD software and Rapid Tooling software (Magics RP) to prepare CAD data for use. We also possess aparatus and machines to infiltrate and coat sintered parts with resin and low melting point metals, a shot blasting cabin for various media (metal shot, ceramic powder, granulated nuts) as well as workspaces for finishing Rapid Tooling pars.
